“I Can’t Breathe.”
Local 99 of the American Federation of Musicians is committed to raising our collective voices for the furtherance of racial, social, and economic justice, both within our ranks and in our community at large.
We are a union that knows not only that Black Lives Matter, but that Black Lives Lead, Black Lives Shepherd, Black Lives Create, Black Lives Innovate. We must echo and amplify the voices and urgent messages of our Black brothers, sisters, and siblings.
We also understand that an injury to one is an injury to all, and that any failure to challenge oppression is a tacit declaration of complicity.
Therefore, AFM Local 99 commits to redoubling our efforts to examine our practices through a lens of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. These include, but are not limited to, internal governance, leadership, elections, auditions, negotiations, and our external activities with music venues and the music industry in general.
Only through our unconditional support and solidarity with the Black community can we assure the justice, peace, and well-being so long deserved.
